Pingu is a unique and quirky show conceived in 1986 by Swiss animators Otmar Gutman and Harald Muecke. The show follows the adventures of the sometimes mischievous and clumsy Pingu as he plays and interacts with his family and friends. Pingu lives in the Antarctic and does all the things you might do if you were a young penguin in the Antarctic, such as discover vast musical ice caves, play fish tennis, misplace your sister, find a treasure map and periodically enrage most of the local penguin population in one way or another. Pingu is a penguin of emotional extremes -- he's full of energy, life and love. Exceptionally expressive, Pingu's special 'Penguinese' language is fun and imaginative.
Pingu is a charming and cheeky young penguin who is always up to mischief, getting himself into comical situations in the snowy world in which he lives. He is naively fearless until his antics are found out! When faced with an angry penguin with a broken window or with a parent who has discovered a living room full of popcorn, Pingu panics, flapping his wings nervously!
Pingu spends his days playing with family and friends, including his best friend Robby, his dad (whom he helps at the post office), his sister, Pinga, his mother and his grandfather. As a big brother, Pingu always makes a fuss when he has to look after his little sister, but he secretly loves taking care of Pinga - and if she's in trouble he'll be the first one to try and cheer her up.
In the igloo, Pingu's favorite possessions are his teddy, trains, planes and other toys made by his father. He also loves reading books, listening to music and inventing imaginary games with anything he finds lying around. He is very handy on a sledge and loves his blue push-along scooter, but his favorite method of transport is riding on the back of his Dad's snowcart.
Like any growing penguin, Pingu has a healthy appetite and will guzzle spare fish whenever he finds them. He also has very well defined tastes, refusing to eat his greens or his porridge but happily overindulging on sweets and popcorn.
Day to day, Pingu always finds some new physical activity to enjoy - he loves skiing, sledding and ice hockey. He is competitive and does not like to be on the losing team or left out of the fun. Pingu also has a tendency to want to be in the spotlight and can get grumpy if he thinks he's not getting enough attention.
In Pingu's world, everyone speaks in "Penguinese" -- an expressive penguin language which is fun and imaginative (and easy to understand!).
