Fireman Sam™, the Ultimate Hero Next Door, has been racing to the rescue of his friends and colleagues in all sorts of perilous situations since he first made his UK TV debut in 1986. Based in the pleasant Welsh village of Pontypandy, Fireman Sam is a pillar of the community and the hero of every rescue. Whether stuck on a high cliff-face or caught in an underground cave, the children of Pontypandy know help is always close at hand -- thanks to the brave and resourceful Fireman Sam. Fireman Sam airs on Sprout in the US.
Penny Morris
Penny Morris is assertive and likeable, always up to her duty, and often regarded as "one of the boys". Terrific back-up in any crisis, Penny drives "Venus," the red rescue tender. Strong and wiry, Penny is a keep-fit fanatic who can't pass a mirror without flexing her muscles and checking out her biceps. She's a great self-motivator and is always giving herself pep-talks under her breath "Come on Penny. You can do it! Go girl, go!" Penny is great friends with Tom Thomas, the rescue-helicopter pilot. Their idea of a relaxing day is a ten mile hike followed by rock climbing and abseiling.
Elvis Cridlington
Fireman Elvis Cridlington, the Fire Station cook, is one of those people for whom the Fifties never died. Although a young man, he is an avid fan of classic rock 'n roll, and is of the firm opinion that Beethoven should roll over and tell Tchaikovsky the news. Elvis is more modern and trendy when it comes to cookery, but still manages to overcook everything, even salad.
Elvis isn't the brightest spark but he's absolutely dedicated to fighting fires, just so long as he can look really cool while he does so. Elvis is Sam's apprentice and is in awe of his superior.
Station Officer Steele
Station Officer Steele is the senior fire officer at Pontypandy and is a fireman of the old school. Steele by name and steely by nature, he has an inflexible adherence to the rules. But his bark is worse than his bite and he has a lovable pomposity and bluster. Sam is the real reason that the Pontypandy Fire Service is so efficient but he lets S.O. Steele believe that he's the boss. With a stiff military bearing, Station Officer Steele issues terse orders to the lower ranks, "Right, let's go!" "Get to work, men." The generation gap is widest between Station Officer Steele and Naughty Norman whom he thinks would profit from a spot of National Service even though he is only eight. "Just wait till I catch up with you, Norman Price!" is a cry often heard from Station Officer Steele when he is the victim of one of Norman's pranks.
Dilys Price
Dilys Price is Pontypany's gossiping greengrocer and a pivotal member of the community. She's also the mother of Norman, who brings her joy and exasperation in equal quantities. Dilys makes sure that Norman wants for nothing and when she isn't scolding him, she showers her son with love, attention and sherbet fountains on a daily basis. Much to Norman's embarrassment, she refers to him as "Mummy's little darling Norman." Although she claims to be "rushed off her feet," Dilys always has time for a cup of tea and a chinwag especially if Trevor Evans stops by.
Naughty' Norman Price
Born with a dominant mischief gene, naughty Norman is constantly playing pranks on the people of Pontypandy. Norman's behaviour is never cruel or criminal, but he has a vivid imagination and a keen sense of adventure. He is an intelligent little boy who'll do anything to keep boredom at bay. A love of speed means that Norman owns both a go-kart and a skateboard. Norman lives above the grocery shop with his mum, Dilys.
Sarah and James
Sarah and James are niece and nephew to Fireman Sam. The children spend most of their time with their indulgent uncle. Although they generally get on well with one another, they inevitably squabble as children do and sibling rivalry occasionally rears its head. Being twins, Sarah and James constantly finish one another's sentences and always know what the other one is thinking.
Sarah is the more sensible of the two. She's the voice of reason, and consequently James hardly ever listens to her. She is the most well-behaved of all the children and is held up as a good example by the mothers of Pontypandy. Sarah is always neat, tidy and polite.
James questions everything. He's a very stubborn little boy who digs in his heels if he thinks that his plans are being thwarted. James aspires to be like his free-spirited playmate Mandy Flood and never questions her decisions. "Cool! Let's do it!" is his natural reaction to adventure. James doesn't think of himself as a child, like his sister Sarah, he considers himself an honorary firefighter and doesn't see why he can't be in the thick of the action alongside his Uncle Sam.
Trevor Evans
Trevor Evans is Pontypany's smooth talking bus driver. His bus doubles as a school bus for Sarah, James, Mandy and Norman and also as the sole service to nearby Newtown. A cheery, talkative character, Trevor will often reschedule a bus service if he's offered a "lovely cup of tea" or a cappuccino. He's got a way with the ladies and frequently finds both Dilys Price and Bella Lasagne vying for his attention. Trevor can be a little clumsy at times, which has a habit of landing him in trouble.
Bella Lasagne
Bella Lasagne is Pontypany's talkative, and warm-hearted Italian café owner. Bella is a real drama queen and overreacts to every situation. The slightest thing has her waving her expressive hands in the air and exclaiming "Mamma Mia!" Bella's cafe is the hub of Pontypandy and is a meeting place for the characters, children and adults alike. It's also a little corner of Italy in South Wales. Bella treats Rosa, her cat, as if she were a child.
Tom Thomas
The new Mountain Rescue Station on the lower slopes of Pontypandy Mountain is manned by Tom, a young, good looking Australian, who pilots the Mountain Rescue Helicopter and drives the Mountain Rescue Landrover. Tom is a confident ambitious "Jack The Lad." He's got a soft spot for fire fighter Penny Morris, which sometimes puts him in conflict with Penny's love struck colleague Elvis Cridlington. Because he is new to the area, Tom relies heavily on Sam's local knowledge and rescue experience. As he tells Sarah and James, "Your uncle Sam has forgotten more about rescuing people than I'll ever know." Sam is a father figure to Tom and restrains him when he is being too impetuous.
Tom doesn't have a problem working at this solitary outpost because his love of nature means he's never lonely. He's always nursing some orphaned fox cub or ailing fledgling that he has found before returning them to the wild. This means that the Rescue Station is a regular port of call for the animal-loving children.
Mike Flood
Newcomer Mike Flood is Pontypany's kind hearted but accident-prone odd-job man. Musical Mike is passionate about percussion and has fashioned a steel-drum kit from de-commissioned boilers. Because he's in a dream world of drum solos he doesn't always concentrate on the work at hand, often with disastrous results. Mr Flood is very community spirited and is a regular volunteer for the Mountain Rescue Service.
Nurse Helen Flood
Nurse Flood is calm, brisk and efficient. She's courageous, quietly confident and totally unruffled by disaster. She enjoys reggae music and it can constantly be heard from her car stereo. It was a shared love of music that drew Helen and Mike together. As well as visiting the sick of Pontypandy, Nurse Flood accompanies the Fire Service and the Mountain Rescue Team on their call outs as paramedics. Both Sam and Tom Thomas rely heavily on Helen's extensive medical knowledge when it comes to rescuing and airlifting the injured.
