Wendy L. Sims, Ph.D.

Music Consultant

Wendy L. Sims is the Music Consultant on the new CG animated series, Angelina Ballerina™ The Next Steps. In this role, she was responsible for creating the music curriculum and subsequently reviewing scripts and animation to ensure the curriculum was incorporated correctly.

An academic and professional for over 25 years specializing in early childhood and elementary music education, Dr. Sims holds bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from Kent State University and a doctoral degree in music education from Florida State University.

Dr. Sims is currently Director and Professor of Music Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia in the School of Music and the Department of Learning, Teaching & Curriculum where has served as Associate Chair, Department of Learning, Teaching, & Curriculum, since 2004. Ms. Sims has been a member of the faculty since 1985.

Prior to that, she taught K-6 general music, and continues to volunteer weekly as the music teacher for preschool and toddler classrooms in MU's Child Development Laboratory. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Service Award, MU College of Human Environmental Sciences; Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching; Teacher of the Year from the College Education Student Council; and the Missouri Governor's Award for Teaching Excellence.

Dr. Sims is an active researcher and writer, publishing articles regularly in national and international journals such as the Journal of Research in Music Education, International Journal of Music Education, and Music Educators Journal. She is editor of the book Strategies for Teaching: Prekindergarten Music, and co-editor of the book Music in Prekindergarten. In July 2006 she was appointed as Editor of the Journal of Research in Music Education.

Dr. Sims has held national offices in MENC's Society for Research in Music Education, including Chair, and serves as the state Research Chair for the Missouri Music Educators Association. She also has been an active leader within the International Society for Music Education.
